Hysterectomy
Occasionally, some of the most common gynecological conditions require hysterectomy, the complete removal of the uterus. The most common cause is uterine fibroids, but abnormal bleeding, endometriosis, pelvic organ prolapse, and uterine cancers can indicate removal.
Hysterectomy is a major surgery, although those performed laparoscopically result in smaller incisions and shorter recovery times—usually 2–3 weeks to resume normal physical activity and 6–8 weeks to resume sexual activity.
